#112wishlist

Common Cause has already shared our wish list for the 112th Congress:

  • Put voters first. It’s time to change the way we pay for campaigns so that they’re about Main Street, not Wall Street. The best way to put elections back in the hands of ordinary Americans is to pass the DISCLOSE Act and the Fair Elections Now Act.
  • Protect the ethics watchdog. The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) is the only independent watchdog on Capitol Hill and it must be protected, not weakened or eliminated.
  • Keep K Street out of the Capitol. With voter confidence in Congress at an historic low, it’s time for our elected officials to demonstrate who government is for – the people. Members of Congress should pledge not to hire corporate K Street lobbyists to staff their offices and committees.

What are you hoping for from the next wave of American lawmakers? Tell us here, or tell us on Twitter using the hashtag #112wishlist. We’ll compile a list and send it along to new Speaker of the House John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid before the 112th Congress convenes.

  1. Better anti-discrimination legislation that permits that EVERYBODY (of course WOMEN and ETHNIC MINORITIES) have REAL equal access to decent jobs and education.

  10. Raise or remove income cap on Social Security tax, impose income cap on Social Security benefits, and, having thus secured the Social Security fund in perpetuity, formally commit NEVER AGAIN to raid the Social Security fund to cover any kind of deficit or shortfall. The wouldn’t think of defaulting on debts to Wall Street bankers and capitalists. HOW DARE THEY even suggest defaulting on what they borrowed from working people’s retirement funds!!!
