U.S. Conference of Mayors Unanimously Passes Resolution Against Corporate Personhood

Last week the U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a U.S. Constitutional Amendment to clarify that corporations are not people and money is not speech.

Portland, Oregon’s Mayor Sam Adams brought this resolution before his fellow mayors. This action followed Mayor Adams leadership in the Portland City Council’s enactment of a similar resolution earlier this year when he also pledged to urge this action by the Conference of Mayors.

The Conference should adopt the position that corporations should not receive the same legal rights as individual human beings, and that the USCM should advocate to Congress that the most urgent action needed is to enact legislation to reverse the impacts of the US Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which has allowed unlimited corporate donations to influence the outcome of our elections.
