Fix The Filibuster, Or Finish It?

Filibuster abuse has paralyzed the Senate, and kept important legislation from the DREAM Act to DISCLOSE on the sidelines. That’s why all of us at Common Cause are pleased that Harry Reid and other reform-minded Senators are talking about changing the Senate’s rules and breaking Washington gridlock.

Reid has said he wants to weaken the filibuster, but not get rid of it. That’s a great start, but we need to go further. That’s why, last night, I went on CurrentTV to talk with Eliot Spitzer and the Brennan Center’s Michael Waldman about all the possibilities for fixing the filibuster:

Common Cause, the Brennan Center, and other government reform groups have started the Fix The Senate Now coalition, asking the Senate to take the steps I mentioned when they reconvene in January.

We’re not stopping there however. Common Cause has sued the Senate to stop the unconstitutional filibuster; our case is set for an important hearing on December 10. Until then, stay tuned to our website for the latest filibuster news!

  1. Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is important and everything. But think of if you added some great graphics or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and videos, this website could definitely be one of the most beneficial in its niche. Terrific blog!
