Where is Massachusetts Congressional delegation on “Government By the People Act”?

Yesterday, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) introduced his Government By the People Act, HR 20, legislation to raise up the voices of everyday people in the political process.

The bill (full description hereempowers everyday Americans to participate in the election process by providing every American a $25 My Voice tax credit that can be donated to a Congressional candidate of your choice. With Americans newly empowered to participate in campaign giving, candidates will be able to re-engage with everyday voters, improving our representative democracy and reducing Congress’ dependence on big money interests.

It also amplifies the voice of everyday Americans by providing a 6 to 1 match for every political contribution to a Congressional candidate under $150.

The bill helps sever Congress’ dependence on big money so that Congress can focus on the people’s priorities. It helps return our government to one that is of, by, and for the people, not of, by, and for the big money donors.

Over 130 House members have signed on as cosponsors. Four are from Massachusetts: Congressman Jim McGovern, Congressman Stephen Lynch, Congressman John Tierney, and Congresswomen Katherine Clark. Send a tweet thanking these Representatives for their support.

But what about our other Congressmen and women? None are cosponsors of this groundbreaking legislation to help restore and protect our democracy. Send your Congressman or woman a tweet now encouraging them to cosponsor #ByThePeople Act. Use one of the tweets below or our #SoundOff campaign.

  1. Although the intention may be good, in the long run it will only add to the paving of the road to Election hell. The People Act (H.R. 20), proposed by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Sarbanes will amplify the amount of the small donations given to a politicians campaign in hope to compete with the billions given by Corporations. It is thought that by turning a $25 “Ma and Pa” donation to between $100 to $700 will level the playing field and have the politician who’s palms we grease be more willing to the common mans whims and wishes. Do they not see this is still promoting self interest, albeit not at the mega million level of the corporations, but still buying a vote? Of course if you were a cash rich good old network politician you would die at the prospect of turning $25 to $700 to spend on the countless diatribes of personal attacks to your opposition in all forms of media to the point of nauseating the electorate.
We need to do more….take out ALL private money from elections!!
Use only tax supported funds that can be distributed evenly and can really give a grass root good politician a chance to compete. We would not need the billions of dollars we now seem to need in our election process by giving a mature even playing field and forum to listen to the ideas and reasoning of those who would want to serve us.
This can be done, but don’t look for the career cash bloated good ole boys and yes girls to implement this. Only a revolution and a uproar by the electorate can drive this and is our constitutional duty.

  2. WHY IS THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS VOTING LIST A SECRET? is that Government by the people ?
