Texas D. A. on DeLay's "Contempt for Moral Values"

Ronnie Earle, the district attorney for Travis County, Texas, who is heading the investigation into Tom DeLay's political fundraising, calls out the ethical behavior of the Majority Leader:

Austin, Tex. -- It is a rare day when members of the United States Congress try to read the minds of the members of a grand jury in Travis County, Tex. Apparently Tom DeLay's colleagues expect him to be indicted.

Last week Congressional Republicans voted to change their rule that required an indicted leader to relinquish his post. They were responding to an investigation by the Travis County grand jury into political contributions by corporations that has already resulted in the indictments of three associates of Mr. DeLay, the House majority leader.

Yet no member of Congress has been indicted in the investigation, and none is a target unless he or she has committed a crime. The grand jury will continue its work, abiding by the rule of law. That law requires a grand jury of citizens, not the prosecutor, to determine whether probable cause exists to hold an accused person to answer for the accusation against him or her.

In case Mr. Earle couldn't be any more clear he emphasizes it with the often repeated catch-phrase in today's political landscape -
There is no limit to what you can do if you have the power to change the rules. Congress may make its own rules, but the public makes the rule of law, and depends for its peace on the enforcement of the law. Hypocrisy at the highest levels of government is toxic to the moral fiber that holds our communities together.

The open contempt for moral values by our elected officials has a corrosive effect. It is a sad day for law enforcement when Congress offers such poor leadership on moral values and ethical behavior. We are a moral people, and the first lesson of democracy is not to hold the public in contempt.

There is no indictment yet of Mr. DeLay, and there is no overt indication of an indictment, yet a secret, closed-doors meeting and an internal rules change. Interesting.

Delay's contempt for moral values

Why would anyone be surprised by any of dubya's buddies' behavior? I have not been surprised by any of it! This administration was conceived in iniquity by an evil conspiracy starting when President Clinton was in office. It makes me ill when they call themselves Christians: They have not only sinned against Jesus'two commandments -Thou shalt love thy God and your neighbor as yourself but most of Moses' - Thou shalt not lie, kill, steal, bear false witness against thy neighbor, etc, Also they forgot about Jesus' throwing the money changers out of the temple and the story he told that it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus also showed care for children, the sick and elderly.  I could find other sins they have committed  if I did some study but since I'm not religious I've been waiting for sane Christian leaders to have some guts.  They haven't! Apparently they are too scared of the fanatic Religious Right (who I call the American Taliban). They should pray to their God for courage or they might find themselves in a Theocracy! Its really not hard to have courage: I found myself born into a Catholic family with the beliefs of a Buddhist. I am  now a senior citizen and still with Buddhist beliefs. It isn't easy but hopefully the sane ones will find courage.

armageddon sp?

I heard a good example of why George W  is so fast to destroy the environment. It is because he is from the bible belt and they believe in "Armegeddon" sp?. So why not burn it all up before the final end and get all they can get for it. Greed is the religion of DC and all of the "Good ole boys". There is no sherif in town anymore or morals.

"Moral Values???"

I am sick and tired of the hypocrisy of the self-proclaimed "guardians of moral values" who somehow became leaders of Congress. How can they sit there and condemn the investigation of Tom Delay's shady dealings as "politically motivated" while they cling to their quaint double standard?  A Democrat who had committed even half of DeLay's misdeeds would have been expelled from Congress years ago; a private citizen would have been sent to jail!
This is not a partisan issue; apparently there are at least a few Republicans in the House who recognize the vital importance of maintaining ethical standards.  Let's see if they can convince their colleagues that even the majority leader has no right to scoff at the law.
