Political Convenience

There is talk of the White House combining its requests for additional funding for Iraq with a request for money for tsunami relief. According to CongressDaily,

Lawmakers and aides have argued to White House officials that combining the two packages--given the broader bipartisan appeal of tsunami aid--might hasten what is expected to be a drawn-out debate over the much larger Iraq supplemental, estimated to reach more than $80 billion. Delaying the larger package into March to further assess conditions in Iraq is apparently no longer an option, aides said.

Maybe I am just cynical. But, is anyone else appalled by the notion of combining the funding request for the war in Iraq with money for tsunami relief in order to avoid debate about a war most Americans now see as a mistake? I think combining funding for Iraq and Afghanistan and calling them both the War on Terror is misleading enough. If that is indeed the plan, then those who wish to avoid debate on Iraq are guilty of capitalizing on the suffering and horror of this tragedy in southeast Asia and elsewhere for political ends. That is pretty low.

Obviously, you're just cynical,

this administration would never unabashedly use human tragedy for political or financial gain. To do so would make a mockery of moral values, a mockery  inside a sham fronted by a facade.

Re: Obviously, you're just cynical,

cavanaghjam - Thanks for commenting. Perhaps you are right on both counts. Although, in my defense, I would say that this sentence: "Lawmakers and aides have argued to White House officials that combining the two packages...might hasten what is expected to be a drawn-out debate over the much larger Iraq supplemental..." - is not ambiguous. The intent is clear. And I said "those who wish to avoid debate." You assumed I meant the White House...

Read in the new tork times today , that the administration wants to link sunami aid to lowering tariffs in the effected countries .

Re: political convenience

Nothing surprises me any more.  One way or the other they were going to use the Tsunami to advance some kind of legislative agenda of their own.
