Keeping the Pressure On for Election Reform ...

Hi folks.  We have seen record traffic on our blog today.  We launched this site back in October and up until today the most visitors we ever had was on November 2nd of last year - that's right the Election Day.  I suppose the record traffic today has lot to do with couple of online polls we have been running since yesterday.  If you have not cast a vote yet you can do it by clicking here and here.

So ... we have been noticing in the comments section that there is lot of concern, and more importantly energy and passion for election reform.  For those of who have been following us via our blog here or emails will know that election reform has been a huge issue for us.  We generated a lot of energy for election reform during our December 7 conference, "Vote 2004: A Report to the Nation," and during the last couple of years have pushed hard for legislation that will ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast a ballot.

Our "Report to the Nation" conference, which was attended by hundreds of activists from all over the country, was an important step in our efforts to seek meaningful reform for our flawed election systems.  The overwhelmingly positive response from activists and media buzz from the event undoubtedly pushed our agenda for election reform into the consciousness of our congressional leaders and the mainstream media in a big way.

Now we sure can count on you for a little boost.  For last 9 days we have been doing a little online campaign to raise some resources for our election reform efforts.  You can click on "read more" to see an email we sent to our online members on Tuesday.  We had asked for help from our online members to help raise us $20,000.00 so that we can put together an audio and video presentation on why we need election reform.  These features will splice together a number of the stories we collected from voters during last years Election with highlighted comments from our December 7 conference, making a case for why we desperately need legislation implementing meaningful election reform.  Here is a sample.  We are going to use these audio/video features to lobby lawmakers, journalists, and activists all over the country for election reform.  We already have had a pretty incredible response raising more than $18,500.00.  You can certainly help us push over our goal of raising $20,000.00 by next Tuesday.

Again ... we cannot thank you enough for all the comments, feedback, and the passionate discussion (from both sides of the political spectrum) all day today.  Please keep it going.

Of course just by taking these unscientific polls we are not going to stop pursuing for reform in one area at the expense of others.  We know they are all crucial.  But is all helpful for us to know and hear what you are thinking at this point of time.  We see feedback crucial in our efforts to pursue reform.  Not to mention we want this to be a place where we can have vibrant discussions on all aspects of our Democracy.  Speak your mind, speak freely ... all we ask from you is to be respectful to each other.  This is a good place to set a little example for rest of our polarized country on how to engage in true meaningful, civic political discourse.  It would be a small step, nevertheless an important one in reviving the true spirit of our Democracy.  Thanks again.

Our email which went to our online supporters on Tuesday:

Dear Murshed,

We are happy to report that we are almost halfway to reaching our fundraising goal of $20,000 to produce audio and video presentations on what went wrong with voting in 2004 and the urgent need for election reform.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed so far to help us produce these multi-media tools that will allow us to spread our election reform message from Washington, D.C. to California.

We hope with your support to raise enough money to produce the audio and video segments to distribute to independent and other radio stations nationwide, as well as lawmakers, activists and other press:

www.commoncause.org/AmplifyElectionReform

These presentations will help us make the case for election reform by showcasing compelling stories we collected from voters on Election Day. Click below to hear a segment that will be included in the audio presentation:

We cannot afford to forget these voters' stories about problems with our election system, including difficulties with voter registration, provisional ballots, voting machines, voter suppression and intimidation, polling place operations, and absentee ballots.

These problems have not been resolved, and if we want to project ourselves as the standard bearer of the most powerful democracy in the world, we simply cannot ignore them.

We must make sure our elected officials and journalists don't forget the stories simply because we are not in a presidential election year. And the urgency for election reform becomes even more apparent when we read stories about election activists being prosecuted for fighting to make sure that all registered voters are able to cast their votes in a free and fair election, and that all concerns of fraud are addressed by the public officials in charge of overseeing our electoral process.

www.commoncause.org/AmplifyElectionReform

This is why we are asking for your help in our efforts to achieve meaningful election reform in states across the country. We hope you will stay with us in this fight to reestablish the true ideals and spirit of our democracy.

Thank you again for all you do for Common Cause.

Sincerely,

Chellie Pingree

Media Reform is essential for election reform

As one of the people you are referring to (I was an Election Protection volunteer and have spent every day since the election frantically trying to get the news our about how it had been stolen) I have come to the conclusion that without media reform nothing gets reformed. Media reform has to come first, because if the communications systems are blocked, then we can't organize anything else effectively. My wish would be for someone like George Soros to recognize how important this is, and to buy one of the major networks.  With one progressive network scooping the REAL news, the other wimpy networks will have to follow or get left out in the cold.  This is apparently how the progressives got a foothold in so much of Europe, and why we have the Rupert Murdock's here as part of the Right wing strategy.

New to blogs/add Social Security to the agenda

Hello,
I am new to blogs and blogging (yes-I've been resistent) but not to Common Cause.
I am more appalled and discouraged by the news every day. I have burnt out a number of family members and friends by forwarding them information and requests from me that they get active.
Looks like I'll find more like minded company here.
I hope that Common Cause will consider adding exploration of and oppostion to the Bush Administrations proposed reform of the Social Security program.
Yes, the system has problems but I don't believe they are currently at crisis proportions and so much else is. The president seems prone to creating crises to further his own agenda and he needs to be stopped from over inflating the situation and jumping off the deep end again.
One other quick observation from my first day of blogging-I didn't like the tone I sensed
in an exchange between Christian and non Christian-hope it's not the usual.
Also I hope no one will feel compelled to correct my spelling for me when my meaning was quite clear.
 Okay then-blog on.

Hmmmm -sorry but I'll get the hang of it

Well-like I said, I'm new and obviously I put my first posting in the wrong place. I wanted it in the area relating to suggested additions to the 2005 agenda and I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Can anyone tell me how to move it?
Thanks

Live .. once you have posted your comments ... you can't really move it, however you can simply copy your comments (Control C) and then paste it over to the comment section of the specific thread you wanted it to originally post in (Control V). Just keep posting it ... and we are sure you will eventually get the hang of it.
