Temper Tantrum in Ohio

This is what a group ironically named "Protect Your Vote" is saying about the Reform Ohio Now coalition, which includes Common Cause.

"These are the same people who took prayer out of our public schools, fought the defense of marriage act last year, and have attempted to legalize drugs... If we let them win, the impact could be a devastating setback for our traditional family values."

Sounds a bit like, well, a temper tantrum.

The ad is in reference to a host of issues RON is supporting in this year’s elections, which are:

Issue 2: Makes it easier to vote by allowing all Ohioans to vote by mail
Issue 3: Helps stop the influence of big money in elections by greatly reducing campaign contributions.
Issue 4: Stops the politicians from drawing their own legislative districts and puts an Independent Commission in charge of this process.
Issue 5: Places a bi-partisan Board of Supervisors in charge of Ohio's elections, instead of a partisan official who backs candidates and takes sides in elections.
This ad strikes me as proof-positive of the need for these reforms. This group cannot argue against these reforms directly, so they employ generic fear mongering about legalized drugs and gay marriage. I am guessing that the implication is that if these reforms pass, then more crazy liberals (i.e. Democrats) will win elections in Ohio as a result. If, in fact, Democrats did win more seats it would only be because the party in power (currently Republicans) would no longer be able to literally draw the state’s congressional districts to ensure more Republican wins. If the Democrats were in power, the same would be true.

In California, where the Democrats hold a majority, groups from the left side of the political spectrum are opposed to similar redistricting reform Common Cause supports in that state. The lesson: most opposition to these reforms is political in nature. So, in lieu of substantive criticism of these reforms, you get the “traditional family values” treatment.

Temper Tantrums

Its obvious that Common Cause has no political agenda here. Mike, your clearly unbiased on this one, right. The odd thing of course is that "This Group being ridiculed by Common Cause" is of course a Conservative group.  Now, why would Mike Surrusco (clearly an Independent)write an article attacking a Conservative group??
Maybe just maybe (this is hard to believe, i know) Mike Surrusco isn't really non-partisan. Boy, i sure hope my blog doesn't get removed like half of the Conservative blogs on this website that are seen one day, gone the next.

Lo Perla

Who cares if Mike or any other writer for CC has a particular bias, on either side, he is human like the rest of us. Is Hannity and Colmes "Fair and Balanced" like they claim.  Is the "Weekly Standard"(the conservative site) unbiased. Is "Media Matters" or "Air Aimerica" (the liberal website and radio station) unbiased.  We all have Bias deal with it. Im so tired of hearing about Common Cause being biased.

Duh!

La Perla,

Mike is criticizing a stupid, dishonest, illogical ad!  It's from a conservative group but that's not his point.  Conservatives in Ohio and liberals in California are opposed to reforms because the reform would cost them some power!

Too bad - because Common Cause promotes democracy - everywhere!  That's why I'm a member!

Anyone in Ohio who opposes Issue 4 (anti-gerrymandering) is clearly NOT supporting democracy because that issue does NOT favor liberals or conservatives.  It - and the other RON issues - promotes fair elections!

Get going

I'll never approve voting by mail. The risk of fraud is too big to not consider it. In civilized countries a voting commission is going to the people who cannot walk to a voting center. You need some Generic Drugs to get in touch with reality again.
