Pay-to-Play Victory in New Jersey!

Here is a message from Lauren Skowronski of Common Cause New Jersey...

One year of hard fought lobbying by the Common Cause NJ, the Citizens' Campaign and other reform organizations -- supported throughout the state by hundreds of letters and emails from you -- were rewarded Thursday with the unanimous vote by the NJ State Senate to pass S-1987.  This "Enabling Legislation" protects over 60 existing local Pay-to-Play reform laws from being "pre-empted" by the weak statewide bill that goes into effect on January 1, 2006.  Just as important, this win preserves the right of citizens in other municipalities to protect their own hometowns with their own strong legislation.

Contact Lauren@JoinTheCampaign.com to find out how you can bring this law to your town.  Special mention must be made of Senator Joseph Vitale's bold move to call for an "Order of the Day" motion to crack the legislative logjam which has existed since June.  Joined by the bill's other Senate co-sponsor, Senator Peter Inverso, and with the active support of Acting Governor Richard Codey, this motion carried the day. We offer them -- and the other courageous legislators who have been supporting this bill all along, and the groups and citizens who made their voices heard -- our deepest thanks.

Top 10 ways to improve Pa. today

Forget term limits, or caps on lobbying and campaign contributions, or other pie-in-the-sky pipe dreams.

This is Pennsylvania, a place that's been corrupt and purposely inept since William Penn's sons first conned Indian tribes out of more land than their father owned by abusing the Walking Purchase.

With that in mind, I offer these bipartisan suggestions that with a little off-the-shelf technology and a pen might help level the playing field between the voting public and the privileged elite that are our elected and appointed public officials.

I've even e-mailed a copy to Gov. Ed Rendell. Let's see if he replies.

10. Immediately add the words "and lobbyists expenses" to Act 71 of 2004, the state law legalizing slot machines, under the provision that prohibits campaign contributions from all potential slot machine parlor licensees and slot machine manufacturers.

Penn National Gaming Inc. spent nearly $1 million last year just to lobby the state Senate - a full year after the slots law was passed. Wonder what they wanted? If that money had been spent in campaign contributions somebody would be heading to jail.

Pay-to-Play Victory in New Jersey!

I have made no secret of my support for Chairman Ferriero and from what I know of George Norcross, I support him too.  I like when Democratic organizers and leaders are able to create democratic victory in places that were not that long ago considered to be GOP strongholds.  I just notice that many of the criticisms that are leveled  against Ferriero are said about Norcross.
