Good News from the Southwest!

Hi Everyone. This is Matt from Common Cause New Mexico again.  A few weeks ago, I posted a message about an electoral reform bill moving through the New Mexico legislature.  Well, I am happy to report that the bill was signed by Governor Bill Richardson on Wednesday afternoon!  The bill provides uniform standards for counting provisional ballots, voter verified paper trails for our state's electronic voting machines and better training for New Mexico's poll workers.  The bill also has inclusive voter identification measures.

As Barb mentioned in an earlier post, election reform advocates from every state can exchange information about this important issue at the Common Forum.  Meanwhile, I will keep everone update here on all of reform related intiatives in the Land of Enchantment

Good

George W. Bush won New Mexico last year by fraud. Hopefully, this will fix that.

That is great news

One question though ... can you elaborate a bit more on the "inclusive" voter ID measures?  I am interested in learning about the legislation in sense what it means by "inclusive."  Because voting id measures often tend to be a concern which tends to be pushed by folks from the right.  Interested in hearing more...

Voter ID

Thanks for the question about voter ID. If you click on the "signed" link, it will take you to an AP article that explains in good detail the bill's ID measure. The article also highlights the partisan battle going on in New Mexico around this issue-a battle that rages on in other states as well.

Re: Voter ID

Thanks for the prompt reply Matt.  Should have clicked on all the links before asking that question.  Looks like the GOP lawmaker didn't have a favorable reaction to the ID requirement - well that indicates it may not have been a bad legislation after all (lol ... joking my GOPer friends).  Nice work again.
