Jack Gould

Our Blog guru, Murshed, gives me the the weekend lite-blog shift, so here's my next offering profiling members of our national governing board. Last week, it was Rev. Bob Edgar -- this week it's a remarkable guy from Nebraska, Jack Gould.

I've known Jack and his activist work for years. He's the state government watchdog in his role as Issues Chair of Common Cause Nebraska. Jack is well-known to members of the state's unicameral state legislature, walking the halls, testifying, and talking to the press about the latest outrage. He's a former high school football coach who's taken on the privileges - like free cars for coaches (reg. req.) - of the U of Nebraska's monster football program.

Jack does not just scream and yell about wrongdoing, he works at changing it. He's a dogged investigator whose credibility and reliable information are prized by reporters. He helped make one local story, about Members of Congress appearing in pharmaceutical company ads, "go national", forcing the company to drop the ads.

Jack is truly the kid of citizen activist that John Gardner talked about when he founded Common Cause. He's been in Nebraska all his adult life, helped run a cattle ranch with his brother, been an advocate for public schools and runs a bed-and-breakfast outside Lincoln with his wife Harriet. He's going to be a great new addition to our board.

Jack's work

Jack Gould's Latest Work in Nebraska (none / 0) Following up on Ed's latest post, I'd like to throw my two cents in on the work of Jack Gould. I've recently had the opportunity to work with Jack on a very important telecommunications bill. Jack and I have worked hard to shut down LB 645 in Nebraska, a bill introduced by Speaker Brashear designed to favor large media corporations while preventing Nebraska's consumers from having access to the latest high speed systems at the lowest costs available. Jack has been on top of this bill from day one. He discovered that Speaker Brashear was embroiled in a serious conflict of interest on this bill. Brashear serves as legal counsel to Cox Cable, one of the corporations who would benefit most if the bill were passed. Jack has been quoted in several newspapers on the issue and has been successfully working the state legislature to stop it. We've also been making phone calls to our members in Nebraska to make sure they are aware of the issue and to provide them the information they need to encourage them to lobby their state legislators to oppose this damaging bill. We expect another victory is in store, something that wouldn't be possible without the great work of Jack Gould and Common Cause Nebraska. We're lucky to have him aboard and look forward to more of his good work. Dan Lijana
