I am going to be generous and give the President credit for saying (reading) the right things and proposing a big plan to set things right in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. OK, that's enough.
We should focus on the rebuilding, but we also have to look back now on what the government failed to do. Now, while attention is being paid, we have to make sure there is a tough and independent investigation of what went wrong in the response to the Katrina disaster.
Bush is right:
Four years after the frightening experience of September the 11th, Americans have every right to expect a more effective response in a time of emergency.
Bush is wrong:
When the federal government fails to meet such an obligation, I as president am responsible for the problem and for the solution. So I have ordered every Cabinet secretary to participate in a comprehensive review of the government response to the hurricane. ... This government will learn the lessons of Hurricane Katrina.
Nope. Those lessons will not be learned by the government investigating itself. An independent, bipartisan and nonpartisan commission is what's needed.
