Richardson announces the creation of an ethics reform task force.
Hi Folks, this is Matt from
Common Cause New Mexico. On April 20, the Southern New Mexico chapter of Common Cause New Mexico held its third annual luncheon, featuring a keynote address from Governor Bill Richardson. Governor Richardson announced the creation of an
ethics reform task force to recommend the toughest possible changes to the state's ethics laws.
Now, we all know interim committees and task forces can be places good ideas and real reform go to die. That's why Common Cause New Mexico members and supporters must make their voices heard at each and every task force hearing. Common Cause will likely have a representative on the task force, but a task force member is not enough. It's the members and friends of Common Cause in New Mexico who have the power to influence the final task force recommendations.
New Mexico, like many states and Washington, D.C., is experiencing an ethics scandal that seems to grow by the day. The state legislature failed to enact real ethics reform during the recent legislative session. And, with a federal racketeering and extortion trial in full gear, state elected officials in the Land of Enchantment are racing to donate tainted campaign contributions to charitable organizations.
With growing public disdain for excuses, and with 2006 elections right around the corner, elected officials are beginning to feel the heat. We must keep the heat on in New Mexico, through the task force hearings, at candidate forums and at the ballot box during the primary and general elections.
