My appearance on The Daily Show

REMINDER: The Daily Show appearance is tonight, Wednesday.

Wednesday night is the broadcast of our interview with Ed Helms of The Daily Show, which was taped nearly three weeks ago.  I always have mixed feelings when I know that I am going to be on TV -- on the one hand I want to be sure a lot of people know and watch, so they can hear more about the work we are doing at Common Cause and the issues that I am discussing, but on the other hand, there is always the chance that it will be embarrassing, and I would rather no one was looking!

And, this is The Daily Show...and the interview is with the very funny Ed Helms!!  He does a really good job of poking fun at whoever they interview, so why should this be any different?  This is a segment about how easy it is for Members of Congress to win reelection (their 98% reelection rate, and how they use redistricting and fundraising laws to hold on to their comfortable seats) and the fact that Congress is holding its shortest session this year in a half-century.  I figured out early in the interview that it was more fun to play along - as Ed started showing great sympathy with the "poor trapped Members of Congress, who couldn't get out of their seats if they tried."  However, I was quickly reminded that I was there to be serious...oops! -- No more giggling or "smart-ass" remarks from me!

Well, watch and let me know what you think -- as they say in politics, as long as they spell your name right, the rest doesn't matter; or in this case, as long as people learn something about Common Cause and the battles we take on -- it is all good.  And, let's face it, for all the nights we are on NBC Nightly News or the Lehrer News Hour, it is telling people that you are going to be on The Daily Show that makes them say, "Wow!"

Hilarious

The segment was hilarious.  I'm just glad Ed Helms didn't bring out any props at Common Cause, like the one he had for Rep. Blumenauer.  I'm sure Chellie was relieved too.  It's amazing how a professional TV crew can make our office look so nice, somehow even the piles of colored paper from our grassroots lobby day looked fancy.  Of course, Chellie was great.  She took Ed's nonsense well, although 97 tons would indeed crush a person.  My favorite clip was just before the commericals where Ed and Chellie and talking about the Founding Fathers and re-animating the dead.

show

I don't watch the Daily show as much as I used to and to be honest I would rather have heard Chellie talk for whole time and skip the Ed Helms part.  I'd like to see a good 5 minute Chellie podcast about the need for campaign finance reform. Maybe you guys are sick of hearing it but there are still a lot of people who haven't focused on the problem yet.

just my two cents....

the link

Very nicely done -- Chellie came off like a serious person who has a sense of humor nonetheless. Of course, the show wasn't gunning for her! Really, her appearance was an ad for Common Cause, telling the Daily Show audience that there is a group working on this issue. Mission accomplished, as they say.

For anyone who missed it, the segment is on the Daily Show site. It's called "The Big House."

OK, here's a link to it:  http://tinyurl.com/zmzqu

Loved it!!!

Sometimes people take the interview way too seriously - Chelli handled the interview with grace and an excellent sense of humor!

CC President appears on another Left-wing show

Yes great work Chellie, you once again showed why Common Cause is a Left-Wing pro-Liberal group. First it was Al Franken and now the Daily Show. Why don't you stop lying and just admit your a Liberal front group.  You do not have a single Republican on your staff, yet you insult the intelligence of your members by calling yourself "Nonpartisan".

Have no "fear"

I figure this was not easy for you, The Daily Show can catch by surprise no matter how hard you worked to avoid that. It's normal to have these thoughts but I think spontaneity can get you out of "trouble" quite fast. You just need to have a little faith and let things go naturally. At least you have the chance to say something.
