Undermining Bipartisan VRA Support

Rep. Arthur Davis (D-AL) argues in this morning's Hill that the Voting Rights Act should be renewed.

It would be a powerful statement in a divided political environment if both parties endorsed the principle that the meaningful protection of voting power is an essential feature of our legal structure. Conversely, a retreat from the act, even one wrapped in niceties, would be instantly demoralizing to black and white Americans who have valued the act as a cornerstone of a regional and national consensus.
The Act's renewal has received widespread bipartisan support; nevertheless, there is an effort underway to undermine its renewal by some from southern states specifically mentioned in the legislation. Read the rest of Rep. Davis's op-ed here.

History Rhymes

This isn't just about the bad old days. There are many serious problems with the electoral system, in Florida, Ohio and other states, that need to be readdressed. The VRA is one of the pillars of the effort to strengthen democracy in America. Complacency or discomfort about our record on civil rights should not guide current legislation. Thanks Matt.
