New Mexico Ethics Reform

The Albuquerque Journal reports that David Freel, the executive director of the Ohio Ethics Commission, spoke to the New Mexico ethics task force recently offering advice on reforms. Currently, New Mexico has no limits on campaign contributions, and also no ban on gifts. The task force's objective is to recommend changes to New Mexico's current system.

Also speaking to the task force this week was Todd Lang of the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission. Mr. Lang presented the task force with information about Arizona's clean elections system. Read more about that presentation here.

Common Cause New Mexico's Matt Brix is a member of the task force and perhaps he can weigh in on any new developments . . . ?

A Lot of Work

Thanks for the post, Matt.  We have a lot of work to do here in New Mexico.  One of the greatest challenges in this process is to push the task force to come up with a sufficiently bold set of recommendations.  Common Cause has been pushing for sweeping reform and has worked to get the public engaged in the process.  We hope the combination of our ethics pledge campaign and the monthly meetings of the task force over the next few months (along with a federal corruption trial) will motivate public officials to pass real reform legislation during the upcoming 2007 legislative session.
