How much lobbyist money has Christine DeLay received?

The more and more we learn about DeLay and his and his family's ties to lobbyists, the more untenable his claims of innocence become.

Yesterday the Washington Post reported that Tom DeLay's wife Christine received not only a salary from lobbying heavyweight Edwin Buckham, but also received a retirement account from him.

The account represents a small portion of the income that DeLay's family received from entities at least partly controlled by lobbyist Edwin A. Buckham. But the disclosure of its origin adds to what was previously known about the benefits DeLay's family received from its association with Buckham, and it brings the total over the past seven years to about half a million dollars.

This article is a must-read, if only because it details the role that Buckham, former Chief of Staff for DeLay and a registered lobbyist since at least 1999 (according to Congressional lobbying disclosure records), has continued to play in DeLay's professional life.

It also gives some interesting details on how this relationship with Ed Buckham ties into Rep. John Doolittle and his wife, and (it all comes back to him) Jack Abramoff. Read it!

Washington Post owned by Democrats

Why does COMMON CAUSE continue to use an ultra-  liberal newspaper as its regular news source on issues relating to Washingtion politics. I thought the whole idea of CC was to be a nonpartisan organization which was set up to hold government accountable. But time after time they quote the The Washington Post. This newspaper has been owned by the Meyer-Graham family since it was purchased in 1933. Before Donald E.Graham took over as CEO of the Washington Post company in 1991, it was run by his mother Katharine Graham a very left-wing Democrat. Donald has continued the same liberal bias. By far the majority of candidates endorsed by The Washington Post are Democrats. If COMMON CAUSE wants to continue to call itself nonpartisan it shouldnt be using an ultra-left newspaper as its source.

Every paper is owned by someone who votes

We're not supposed to report any news story that comes from an outlet owned by Democrats?  But outlets owned by Republicans are okay?

As for the rest of your argument, see my response here.

Moritorium

Suggest lobbyists wear FDA nutrition labels and large red targets.  Some say they taste like chicken, but given the pork around Washington, that's doubtful.

When the toxicicity of lobbying by wealthy special interests is so obvious even to a casual observer, why have we not tried a 50-year moritorium to see what would happen if our representative government represented its citizens instead of rapaciously greedy billionairs?  Go figure.

Re: Moritorium

I have a friend (also working in politics) who once wondered which was easier:  finding a parking space in DC or convincing politician to give up money.

I like the idea of FDA warning labels, though -- monied special interests certainly are bad for the health of democracy.
