Sierra Leone!

This just came across my Google News alerts:

"Common Cause-Sierra Leone sensitizes on the role of Parliament"

Common Cause-Sierra Leone! I didn't know we were international! I guess every country needs government that is responsive, accountable, and democratic. So you might as well borrow the name, if only for consistency's sake. According to the article:

CCSL is an organisation with the primary objective of advocating for good governance, promoting democratic awareness, pressing for standards and ethics and making government functionaries accountable for their actions and upholding the basic human rights principles.

They've certainly got their work cut out for them. The country spent the entire 1990s in civil war, and had UN peacekeepers on the ground through last December.

Their government and democratic institutions are still in their infancy, while we have politicians who simply act like infants ("Mine mine mine!"). Or maybe the world's oldest democracy is getting senile. Hard to tell sometimes.

In any case, I wish them the best of luck. Hopefully we'll get a chance to work together and learn from each other. In the meantime, keep fighting the good fight!
