Common Cause/Ohio joins federal lawsuit over Ohio's restrictive voter registration rules

Common Cause/Ohio is one of the plaintiffs which last Thursday filed an Application for Preliminary Injunction in Federal District Court against Secretary of State Blackwell and the prosecuting attorneys of Summit and Cuyahoga Counties.  The complaint challenges the "onerous" new laws and regulations related to "core political speech and association activities."  It also specifically alleges violation of the National Voting Rights Act.

Plaintiffs, who also include Project Vote, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Ohio Now, People for the American Way Foundation, Communities of Faith Assemblies Church and American Association of People with Disabilities, feel that the new requirements will severely harm the efforts of those civic groups which typically do registration drives, by making it almost impossible for them to hire and train workers, and do the kind of quality control that is necessary in this type of effort.

When asked about the lawsuit Blackwell dismissed it as "frivolous," with the claim that "This is about establishing accountability in the system so we are guaranteed that legitimate votes cast are not offset or neutralized by fraudulent votes."  He also said, "This is all about a fear that I, in fact, am going to cut into their traditional base.  What they are doing is perpetuating urban myths that have been knocked down by courts knocked down by law enforcement and election authorities." Read more here.

I don't know what myths Blackwell is talking about.  But what I do know is the real myth is that the so-called evidence that the Republicans have used as the foundation for the draconian "election reform" bill HB 3, and is the basis for these restrictive rules, is the claim that Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck's attempted registrations to vote constituted massive vote fraud.  There have been less than 10 cases of proven "vote fraud" in Ohio, while there is extensive evidence of "election fraud," that puts Secretary of State Blackwell as the responsible agent.

In what Orwellian world does Mr. Blackwell reside?  He and his Republican cabal have turned Ohio's election system upside down, and instead of making it easier for citizens to exercise their right to vote, they have discouraged many from being involved in the process at all.  People have become cynical about their government for many reasons, and Blackwell's hypocrisy only enforces that sentiment.

Common Cause/Ohio and its coalition partners are doing everything they can to find an antidote to this political charade.  The November election is going to be challenging enough without this additional burden on those good people who are just trying to do their civic duty.
