Getting to the truth and why we need a Fresh Start for Democracy

Bob Edgar has called for radical change with Common Cause's Fresh Start for Democracy Campaign.  GrannyD, Doris Haddock, veteran champion of election and campaign finance reform, likes to characterize what is needed as a "velvet revolution," a term borrowed from the Ukrainian transformative election of 2004.

This kind of revolution implies the absence of the weapons of war, but no less the fervor.  Edgar's emphasis on urgency reflects that fervor and the immediacy of the need for change.  He speaks of 2008 being the year in which "we have got a fundamental choice to make."  That choice, to be embraced, has to be predicated on a truthful understanding of what went so terribly wrong and why.  Understanding the past is an important step in formulating enduring change for the future.

A revealing example of the diabolical nature of our democracy's recent decline and the intricate strategies used by those responsible can be examined through the lens of the theft of the 2000 and 2004 elections and is continuing today.

One only needs to be reminded of Orwell's 1984, to begin to understand what is going on in plain sight.  In a recent priceless example to divert attention from the truth, the Cleveland Plain Dealer editorialized on Nov. 24 that:

"Last week, a Columbus attorney asked Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann to launch a criminal investigation into alleged voter fraud. Dann should give the request the consideration it's due - no more than one second - and decline."

What is striking, the Plain Dealer confuses "voter fraud" (only a very few cases of individuals trying to vote as someone else) with the massive evidence of "election fraud," which affected tens of thousands whose votes were not counted or who were unable to vote because of voter suppression strategies.  It is "election fraud" which is being referred to Attorney General Dann for investigation, and which has implications that go all the way to the former Justice Department.

I revealed this same strategy of "newspeak" in a previous blog about John Fund, of the Wall Street Journal, who used the same false information to undermine the truth about the systematic and rampant voter suppression that was evidenced in the 2000 and 2004 elections.  I think, thou doth protest too much!  Or worse, it is a desperate strategy of deception to cover up the crimes that were committed.

The search for truth is the hallmark of responsible journalism without which we the people will not have the tools to challenge what has become a threat, not only to our own democracy and the rule of law, but to the welfare of civil society.

Common Cause's Fresh Start for Democracy Campaign is no less than a clarion call for urgent action to save the future for our children.  We can begin by holding the criminals who stole our elections to account, with an emphasis on protecting the rule of law.  And by understanding the truth about how the money driven political system, promoted by special interests, underlies all of the sleaze, corruption and outright sabotage of our democracy, we can mobilize to enact revolutionary change such as public financing of elections.  This is a bold challenge for Common Cause and all who believe in the possibility of a peaceful future.
