Ohio election reform - a work in progress

Common Cause/Ohio wants to congratulate Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner for her efforts to "Get it Straight in 2008," at least in Ohio.  She promised to work for open, fair and honest elections, and having implemented one of the most extensive testing programs in the country, she has bravely taken on vendors and election reform activists alike.  Her recommendations released last week brought compliments for her efforts, but also some criticism for the substance.

An Associated Press report on Dec. 20 in the Cincinnati Post http://news.kypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071220/NEWS01/712200371  said that, "the findings of an in-depth security review of the equipment present a serious set back to Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who made a campaign promise to restore voter confidence in a system marred by allegations of partisan manipulation and inequity."

On the contrary, what the AP perceives as a set back should be thought of as an opportunity for real reform.  Past evidence of what went wrong in Ohio in 2004 has been labeled as antidotal and untrustworthy.  Now we have evidence that the machines can and do have serious security problems that can allow for election malfeasance, which is exactly what was experienced in Ohio in 2004.

Brunner's recommendations are not perfect, but she should be applauded for taking on this difficult task, and especially for confronting head on the insecurity of the DRE technology. She has begun the process of fixing a badly broken system, and she continues to invite input from others.  With her leadership there is an open process to restore fairness and honesty to Ohio's elections and regain the trust of the voters.

Election reform

Two main items are prominent in my mind:
Mail in ballots only and paper trails. Mail in ballots may be brought in and replaced by a new ballot and turned in by the voter. Then there should be no problem of duplicate voting or voting by unregistered people or non-citizens, etc.
The other big change should be in our entire system. We should be like Canada and have run-off elections where people would have a chance to vote for the candidate of their choice between the top three winners of the first election. It would cost money, but it would help to create third and fourth parties because people would not feel that they might be throwing away their vote by voting for a third or fourth party. In turn it would force our leaders to consider their constituency more rather than special interest groups.

fund raising efforts

Your organization asked for my demo CD to use for a fundraiser peace concert for you. I mailed it to you and have not heard back. I was interested in having a concert to raise money for you, on Lopez Island here in Washington. We are going to perform in the concert anyway, so maybe you are not interested in our raising funds for you?

trade agreements

Before our country enters into any free trade agreement, the minimum wage of the other country needs to be the same as ours and also the mean wage needs to equal ours. Otherwise we need to have an import tax that would equal the difference if we are going to protect our manufacturing base. We need to reinstate the Trade Readjustment Act, also.

trade agreements

Caramel,

I agree with you completely on the trade agreements. NAFTA has had a huge negative impact on our country, no company is ever going to produce anything in America anymore when they can pay a Canuck or Mexican far less.
