Salon.com today features an interview with FCC Commissioner Michael Copps on the subject of media consolidation.
Commissioner Copps has been one of the most reliable allies in our effort to protect the public from greater media consolidation into the hands of fewer and fewer corporations. In the article he points out that even though 99.9% of the people who commented in 2003 on former FCC Chairman Powell's proposal to concentrate the media opposed the plan, current Chairman Martin wants to just go ahead and do the same thing.
Who is the FCC serving? It's supposed to be the people. But 99.9% of the people oppose this plan, so why is it happening?
And why does Martin want a vote on Dec. 18th, while people are focused on the holidays and Congress is headed out of DC?
Let's not let this happen. Congress has heard the public and responded. Now, let's put some pressure on the FCC.
