Florida Media Activists - FCC Hearing Coming to Tampa!

Attention all media activists in Florida!

The FCC has just announced that they will hold an official hearing on the subject of Media Ownership in Tampa on April 30th. There are no more details available at this point, but we will pass them along as they become available.

At this time, we will be looking for folks to get the word out about the event and prepare your own testimony.

Find out more about media reform at http://www.commoncause.org/mediaanddemocracy and take action at http://www.commoncause.org/NoMoreConsolidation.

If you know you want to help get the word out, contact me at jbartholomew@commoncause.org.

Consolidation promotes diversity

I will be out of town and won't be able to attend the hearing, but I would be interested in hearing how the commissioners would respond to the idea that media consolidation actually promotes diversity of voice in the media. In the current market, broadcasters must compete not only amongst one another but also against cable, satellite (both television and radio), and the Internet for the advertising dollars on which they rely. It would seem to me that without the resources afforded by corporate ownership, many of these outfits simply could not afford to continue operating and would be forced to close their doors, resulting in a further loss of independent voices and programming. And in the spirit of full disclosure, I do some consulting work with the NAB.

Since then, FCC chair Michael Powell (Colin's son, right) has been replaced and the new cheese Kevin Martin has promised six public hearings on the issue. The Tampa area hearing would be the fourth, and will likely draw hundreds of people concerned about the impact of allowing too few corporations to control too much of the country's big media outlets.
