Bruno Flying High for Now, But Turbulence Could be Ahead

Senator Joseph Bruno has just made headlines with a controversy revolving around the usage of taxpayer's money to fly to New York City from Albany. Documents show that he flew in a state helicopter to a New York City heliport and then had a state trooper escort him to the office building housing a major CEO who has donated to the state Republican Party.

This is unacceptable behavior for any public figure, including Bruno (or Governor Spitzer for that matter). To get approval for the helicopter, he had to sign a document saying that it was for legislative business, so he most likely has proof that he was doing more than fundraising. He also attacked Governor Spitzer's office for reporting him and even said of Governor Spitzer, "[he] does not understand that he is not a dictator." (As quoted in the New York Times article by Danny Hakim)

But despite Bruno's constant attacks against Spitzer, the fact still remains and the Governor publishes his schedule the public to see. So if Spitzer is giving a speech at a fundraiser, the public knows. This was the case with a $75 per head fundraiser Spitzer spoke at for the Democratic Party, not his own campaign. At the same time however, Spitzer's pledge to only fly to events that do not directly benefit his own campaign doesn't stop him from flying on state aircraft 19 times, eight more times then Bruno, according to The Times Union.

Instead of proving that he was in the City on legislative business, Bruno told the press to give him a break because he had been threatened in recent months, claiming that the trooper was for protection. But if this is really true, then why didn't he file for an official threat assessment. In the end Bruno will most likely clear all this up and at that point we should stop the partisan politics because, Republican or Democrat, the taxpayers shouldn't be paying for unnescecary air fair. Maybe all politicians should go the route of Sheldon Silver, who doesn't use the state air fleet at all.

For more information on the controversy, read this editorial from The Daily News and the article from The Times Union that originally uncovered Bruno's excessive helicopter use.
