Rep. Inslee and 15 others introduce Gonzales impeachment resolution

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA)

As reported yesterday, today Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced a resolution in the House calling for the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether or not Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should be impeached.

The resolution comes from six congressmen, including Inslee, who were once prosecutors.  Nine others have also co-sponsored the resolution.

You can read the resolution here, and watch video of Rep. Inslee's floor speech here. From his announcement on his website, here is Rep. Inslee's rationale for introducing this measure:

During an afternoon press conference announcing the introduction of his legislation, he explained, "Impeachment should only be used as a last resort. In this case, where U.S. attorneys were fired for partisan political purposes, civil liberties and privacy rights were disregarded and testimony to the U.S. Congress was misleading at best, we need to take this serious step to restore the trust of the American people in the office of the attorney general.

"The White House is defending the indefensible actions of Alberto Gonzales," continued Inslee, who hails from Washington state, where U.S. Attorney John McKay was fired in December 2006. "If the president won't do his job, Congress will do ours."

If the resolution garners a majority vote, the Judiciary Committee will start the investigation; if the investigation determines that grounds for impeachment do exist, they can report to the full House one or more articles of impeachment to be voted on.  Common Cause supports this resolution as a necessary measure to restore integrity to our justice system, and commends Rep. Inslee on his leadership in taking this action.

Why impeach him? He's just "American"

Where were all of you when President Clinton needed to be impeached for his lies and his sex scandals? Or is that an acceptable practice for Democrats? Lies are only unacceptable if a Republican is doing it. Here's my impeachment resolution. Let's just introduce a bill to Congress that requires the immediate impeachment of liars, thieves, adulterers, cheats, puppets being controlled by activists and corporations, etc. And once this resolution is created, it will apply across parties. Wow! What a concept! We'll have to invent a new party because no one will be left to vote for from the Republicans or the Democrats! Perhaps if there weren't so much corporate, lobbyist and media control of our elected officials, we could actually get some integrity in our nation. FacingTheSharks

Re:

Speaking for myself, lies from public officials are never acceptable.  When an official's lies have so disrupted our nation's system of government, action must be taken.  There are any number of ways to do this - impeachment should be the last resort; however, Attorney General Gonzales has left us no choice but to pursue that option.  We need to restore integrity to our justice system, and we simply cannot do that as long as he remains in his position.

Impeachment

If all the charges are true, (the last comment indicated that ALL members of Congress lie) I agree that our Attorney General should be impeached.

However I think something is even more critical. I listened to Bill Moyers interview authors, Bruce Fein, who originally called for Clinton's impeachment "because Clinton lied to everyone and the president shouldn't be above the law," etc. and his co-author, John (or Don)Nicols(I didn't catch it when Bill introduced him & didn't get to see the cover of the book they have written) Their book is urging the impeachment of both President Bush & VP Dick Cheny. Fein says they "are more worrisome than Clinton," because of all the illegal things they have done against the Constitution of the United States and US ethics and laws. Both authors stressed that if they aren't impeached, it will set a  precedent for future Presidents and Vice Presidents to also go against the Constitution and conduct illegal proceedings in secret whenever they want to. This would mean that we no longer would have a democracy. (Actually, I think that has already happened for many reasons.) It is no wonder that the vast majority of our citizens want a change in things that go on in our government.
