No light sentence for Noe

Tom Noe, the GOP fundraiser who has long been at the center of the scandal to end all scandals in Ohio politics (entered into public lore as "Coingate"), has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

"You cooked the books ... it was an elaborate scheme," Judge Osowik said before sentencing Noe.

Mr. Osowik said Noe's crimes were premeditated and he "continued to manipulate" the bureau until May 2005 - even after an internal auditor raised concerns about the coin funds.

The judge said Noe acted as if he had a "bottomless cup" of wealth, which was really backed by state money.

Ahhhh...I love the smell of justice in the morning...

Tom Noe pleads guilty

Prominent GOP fundraiser and coin dealer Tom Noe pleaded guilty yesterday to illegally funnelling about $45,000 to President Bush's 2004 campaign.  See the AP article on the Washington Post site here (free registration required).

The Bush campaign has already donated $6000 to charity -- an amount equivalent to the direct contributions from Noe and his wife -- following embezzlement charges against Noe last year with regard to his management of an Ohio workers' compensation fund.  No word on whether an amount equivalent to the illegally-funnelled contributions will also be donated.
